Sterling Silver Exeter Sugar Tongs by Thomas Hart Stone 1866

SOLD

A very good pair of Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs, fully hallmarked for Exeter, 1866 and by silversmith Thomas Hart Stone.
Thomas was the son of John Stone, who had been making flatware in Exeter from the 1840's and seems to have employed six or so men fairly consistently. After he finished school, Thomas joined his father's firm in 1861 and registered his own mark "TS" in about 1863 and it was listed until 1871.
Thomas took over the business on John's death in 1868. Sadly he didn't long survive his father, and died at the tender age of 36 in 1873.
The upshot of this is that TS marked silver from Exeter is relatively rare having a span of production of around 8 years only.
This set of fiddle pattern tongs is very clearly & crisply marked with the maker's mark on one arm and the town, silver, date and Victoria head marks on the other. They are monogrammed to the shoulder and measure approx 6" long
