I believe this small bronze to have significant age. It represents three quarrelling or playing beasts. I originally thought it was Chinese, but after research I now think it is Japanese, depicting three lions entwined in a circle. It is very charming, and the way the figures connect to form the circle is ingenious. In Zen art, a circle is significant, representing the Zen mind which is simultaneously both empty and aware: enlightenment.
I don't think it had a specific purpose, it is just a beautiful object, reminding the beholder of the qualities of Zen and being both empty and complete at once.
It is in good condition, bronze being a strong metal, and carries a deep patina, only achieved by being left unpolished for many years.
A charming and mindful piece that will look good in any room.
