There was no expense spared when this cabinet was made. The lock is the finest Bramah, although sadly lacking a key now, and the walnut veneers are of the the best quality: even the back is book-matched. Internally the original colour and glow is almost glass-like. Naturally on the outside the colour has faded a bit, and there is the odd chip and veneer loss, notably around the lock on the inside.
Each of the eight drawers has a recessed brass pull, allowing the unequal doors to shut flush. On the side of the cabinet the handles are also recessed, in a military style. I do wonder if this wasn't commissioned by an officer in the forces, perhaps for collars, buttons, epaulettes etc?
Whatever its original purpose the drawers are all in fine condition and this will make a fantastic place to store all those bits and bobs that we all have to put somewhere. But the story of this piece is all about the beautiful wood.
