J. Collinson & Sons, a Liverpool family firm, made rocking horses from 1836 to 1993. Following a famous royal visit in 1851 when HM Queen Victoria chose a dapple grey horse, Collinson have always finished their hand carved horses in dapple grey. They are of robust pine construction, with distinctive wide legs, and ride on a strong safety stand. They were sold through stores like Harrods and Hamleys, as well as regional department stores. Collinson horses are usually unmarked until 1981, when a maker's plate was introduced. Collinson closed its doors in 1993.

This example is in excellent working order and mostly original with a restored mane and tail, reins and stirrup leathers. Other than that it is pretty much as manufactured, in probably the late 1930s or 1940s

Stand approx 113 x 35 cms
Overall height from the ground up is 90cms
The horse is approx 78 cms long at hooves x 71 cms high and 10cms wide (again at hooves)
