Herend is one of Europe’s most prestigious porcelain manufacturers, renowned for its exceptional hand-painted wares and long continuity of craftsmanship.
Founded in 1826 in the village of Herend, Hungary, the factory initially produced utilitarian ceramics before turning decisively towards fine porcelain. Its international reputation was secured in the mid-19th century when Queen Victoria ordered a dinner service at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The distinctive butterfly-and-floral pattern created for her became known as the “Queen Victoria” (VBO) pattern and remains in production today.
Herend specialised in reviving and reinterpreting historic European and Asian designs, often combining Rococo exuberance with highly skilled miniature painting. Each piece is still hand-formed and hand-painted, a labour-intensive process that has changed little over the centuries.
Herend porcelain is highly prized by royal houses, heads of state and serious collectors
