This is a fine example of the Russian tradition of lacquered boxes. This one show an iconic figure of Prince Dmitri at the Battle of Kulikova (1380). There is a lot to be found on the internet about this key battle and The Prince.
Here though is a faultlessly executed miniature of exemplary quality, from one of the best sources for lacquered boxes, Kholui. The black ground is a perfect foil for the rich colours with reds and mainly gold that are used in the portrait. Even the base of the box bears the artist details in gold, as is the banner detail running round the box. And just look at the sumptuous red interior.
This little 20thC box carries its original 'leaflet' in English and Russian.
