Georg Jensen silver ring 46A by Harald Nielsen

Harald Nielsen joined Georg Jensen, his brother in law, in c.1909 at the age of 17. He became Jensen's closest colleague and a master designer. This sterling silver (925) ring, 46A, was designed in 1922, just as Art Deco became an important design movement, and continued in production, with a variety of blue stones at its heart, for decades. In the mid-century period synthetic blue sapphires became increasingly important in the Jensen collections, and this actual ring dates from that era. The ring features the 1945 hallmark, so post-dates that, but the pattern number 46A is hand-stamped so before the machine printing that they used on more modern pieces. That dates this Danish mid-century ring as 1950s or 60s, right at the heart of Scandinavian modernism.

Condition is excellent. The cabochon stone is clean and unblemished. The fully hallmarked silver shows just the expected amount of wear, or even a little less given it is heading fast towards 80 years old. The synthetic blue sapphire glows and catches the light - it really is the most gorgeous colour.

The ring is quite large at UK size Q, equivalent it US size 8¼
