Iain Macnab of Barachastlain (1890-1967) was an influential Scottish wood-engraver and painter. He was born in Ilioli, Philippines, of Scottish parents. The Macnab family relocated to Scotland when Iain was very young
He was educated in Edinburgh (Merchiston) and then at Glasgow School of Art followed by Heatherleys, in London where he served as principal from 1991-1925. He was the founding principal of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in 1925, and president of the Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). He was hereditary armourer and standard bearer to Macnab of (Clan) Macnab. He published both as an author and as illustrator of several books, e.g. works by Browning etc
He served in both World Wars and was shot in each, twice in the second World War. He spent two years bed-ridden
He died in London in 1967, having never fully recovered from his wounds
He is renowned for the clarity of composition in his oil works
This fine example of his work, an oil on board, showcases his wood engravers eye and skill with oils in a classic mid-century botanical sculptural arrangement of flora including poppy seed heads, teazels, autumn leaves etc against a muted backdrop.
The paint is thickly applied and the brush strokes very evident: I have tried to show this in a couple of the images. The painting is presented in its original frame, presumably chosen by Macnab himself and it bears several labels on the back, one of which, although faint and worn is the original artists label. There is no doubting the provenance of this fine oil.
The measurements above include the frame. The image itself measures approx 75 x35cms.
