Nancy Bailey, Small Boats Newlyn, signed oil on canvas

This is a gorgeous painting. The key to it is the way the artist has managed the light. It shimmers beautifully.

The title of the painting is annotated on the back: Small Boats Newlyn, with the artist's name. The canvas is signed in the painting too (bottom right).

Nancy Bailey (1913-2012) was a British maritime painter. Her work is characterised by its focus on beach landscapes of the Cornish coast, notably the striking vistas, fauna, and water reflections. Born in the West-Country, Bailey began her artistic career with an interest in photography, imbuing a deep understand of the dynamics of light and nature she would much later translate into painting. Bailey's works are notable for her use of a palette knife to apply paint directly to canvas, creating airy, atmospheric landscapes with characteristic choppy, gestural forms and clever use of light
