Steve Camps is something of a phenomenon, and that is probably understating his appeal. He is a former builder turned full-time artist whose work has skyrocketed in value among much media attention (Guardian, Times, TV, etc). He has proved to be a sound investment for those who bought early and his work now sells in the £000s, and his art is increasingly sought by dealers as well as collectors.
His pieces delight and amuse and his works, based on a deep understanding fostered by a lifetime of studying and collecting naive art, bring a joyful smile.
This painting is tentatively titled "Whales Playing Behind a Coastal Mine House" and it shows the Engine House typical of a tin mine, in a strong nod to Cornish history, Poldark etc. The painting is created in mixed paints on board, and it has all the main themes that make Camps so popular including the 'holy trinity' of a whale, a ship and a lighthouse. Having all three in one painting is quintessential Camps. The artist has signed the piece and framed it.
Dealers note: you are not just buying a painting of whales, you are buying into a specific movement of contemporary Cornish naive or folk art, and this in an investment in an artist who is trending and whose value is still rising. And if you like art that is vibrant, funny and could equally sit in a kitchen or on a gallery wall, then this witty artwork is a first class choice
