Fabulous piece. Made by Baldwin & Miller of Newark, New Jersey and retailed in New York by none other than Cartier.
This actual piece has been in the same household since it was bought from Cartier and gifted as a wedding present. It has never been used. There is some debate as to its exact purpose. Some would say it is for warming brandy, others, like me, say it is for pouring a liquid sauce or cream. Nonetheless it is a wonderful piece of American retail history.
The bowl, with its broad pouring lip and four feet, is made in a good strong gauge of silver, while the handle is turned from a fruitwood. It feels such a natural way to pour, perhaps it was a simple as for milk/cream in your coffee.
It is clearly marked to the base: the word 'Cartier' is in a curve over B.& M., Sterling, 923 (see images).
